‘We’re a little busy here, Homer,’ Mya said from her reclining position against Eden, her blue eyes glowering into Jessie’s again at the interruption.

‘Not too busy for an apology, I’m sure,’ Homer said. ‘I do believe Jessie owes you one.’

They’d set her up.

Homer had wanted to create the exact sense of insecurity that she was feeling right now. He’d given her a glimpse into the Eden he wanted her to see. The Eden he wanted her to believe was beyond hope.

In turn, Mya had purposefully wound her up to make her attack.

She felt sick to her gut that she’d allowed it to happen – that she’d broken her golden rule about never being provoked. She felt even sicker at the sight of the naked woman nestled between the thighs of the man she loved, Mya sliding her hand behind her to grasp Eden’s groin – no doubt also for Jessie’s benefit.

The only sense of control and power she’d been left with was to refuse to indulge in the feelings of betrayal the situation had been set up to evoke. To refuse to be drawn into Homer and Mya’s manipulative game. She would even swallow her pride and apologise there on her knees in order to get out of there – to prevent Homer gaining satisfaction from further punishment, from her further humiliation.

But she knew it was never going to be that simple.

This was just the beginning of Homer’s plan to make her suffer. And he knew nothing would make her suffer more than Eden’s betrayal, whether of their love or their trust. And in that moment she could almost believe either possible.

Lighting a cigarette, Eden took a steady inhale before handing it to Mya in a further show of intimacy, barely acknowledging Jessie as he did so; treating her as if she wasn’t even there. In turn, Mya grabbed his hand and placed it over her breast, her palm wrapped over the back of his hand.

Jessie dropped her gaze and clenched her jaw again, her pulse thrumming with the urge to challenge Eden, to yell at him to snap out of it.

‘My girl went for your girl, Deep,’ Homer said.

Deep: clearly the con name they had given him.

‘We can’t be having that kind of behaviour,’ Homer added. ‘Especially as solidarity is more important than ever right now. Jessie here needs to make up for it. It’s your call as to how she does that.’

Tendrils of disgust unfurled as Homer revealed his test for her and a test for Eden.

If she’d had any doubt of the extent of Mya and Homer’s putridness, it had just evaporated. This would be the ultimate for him: watching Eden hurt, humiliate or degrade her.

Eden barely flinched at the suggestion, staying silent as he toyed with a matchstick between his teeth, before raking her with a sweeping gaze of indifference. Jessie had never felt more alone in his presence.

‘It’s nothing to do with me,’ he said dismissively.

Her heart skipped a beat, her relief at his reluctance to participate dampened by her fear of the repercussions for him.
